E85 price by state
Median price per gallon in each state with at least 10 stations reporting, cheapest first. North Dakota is the cheapest at $2.32; Connecticut the most expensive at $5.09 — a spread of 119%, which is far wider than most drivers expect and the single biggest reason E85 is worth switching to in some states and not others.
The sample size is shown for every state so you can weigh it. States with fewer than 10 priced stations are excluded rather than ranked on thin evidence.

How far apart are E85 stations?
Price is only half the problem — availability is the other half. Across all 5,338 stations we track, the median distance from one E85 pump to the next nearest is 1.6 miles, but the 90th percentile is 9.3 miles. That long tail is the real E85 problem: coverage is dense in the Midwest and thin almost everywhere else, so a nominal price advantage can evaporate in the detour required to reach it.

Methodology
Worth stating plainly, because a number is only citable if you can check how it was made.
- Source. Prices come from the US national alternative-fuels database plus continuous collection and driver reports through E85 App. Every station carries the timestamp of its most recent confirmation.
- Statistic. We publish the median, not the mean. A relatively small number of very expensive coastal stations pull the average upward — today the mean is $2.94 against a median of $2.99 — and the median better represents what a typical driver pays.
- Outliers. Readings below 45% or above 200% of the national median are treated as data errors and excluded. These are almost always mis-scraped diesel or premium prices rather than real E85.
- Sample floor. A state needs 10 priced stations to be ranked.
- Freshness. Only prices confirmed within the last 14 days are counted; today that excludes 458 stations, and the typical included price was confirmed 16 hours ago. Recomputed nightly from scratch — no smoothing, no carry-forward. If our upstream data source goes down, this number gets computed from fewer stations rather than silently coasting on old ones.
- Limitations. This is a census of stations we can observe, not a volume-weighted average of fuel actually sold. A busy metro station counts the same as a rural one.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average price of E85 right now?
The national median is $2.99 per gallon as of July 27, 2026, measured across 4,836 stations with a confirmed price. The mean is $2.94; we lead with the median because a handful of very expensive coastal stations skew the average upward.
Which state has the cheapest E85?
North Dakota, at a median of $2.32/gal across 29 stations. The most expensive is Connecticut at $5.09 — about 119% higher. Proximity to Midwest ethanol production, state fuel taxes and local competition explain most of the gap.
How often is this updated?
Daily. Station prices are collected continuously and this page is rebuilt every night, so the figure above is never more than 24 hours old. Each state's median is recalculated from scratch on every rebuild rather than smoothed.
Can I cite or reuse this data?
Yes — please do, with a link back to this page. The state table is available as a CSV and the underlying station data as JSON. If you need a cut we don't publish, ask.
Why do your numbers differ from other E85 price sites?
Mostly recency and sample. Most published E85 averages are monthly or quarterly figures from a small panel of stations; this is a daily median across every station we have a confirmed price for. We also exclude implausible readings — anything below 45% or above 200% of the national median is treated as a data error rather than a price.
